Founded in 1990 by six Kodiak fishing families, Alaskan Leader Seafoods is an innovative longline fishing operation that can freeze hook-and-line caught seafood while at sea. ALS was joined by the Bristol Bay Economic Development Corporation (BBEDC), a Community Development Quota (CDQ) program designed to encourage fisheries-related economic development in Western Alaska, in 2007. ALS and BBEDC work together to harvest Pacific cod, minimize bycatch, and return funds to support Western Alaska communities to spend as they see fit—typically through business development, environmental impact projects, and school education programs.
