Seaborn Seafoods Owner Ken Quigley was in college when he started coming up to Alaska in the summers with his brother. They were tangentially connected (through his brother’s roommate’s cousin) to a seine fisherman who they fished with during multiple salmon seasons until Ken moved to Craig, Alaska full-time in 1985.

Only reachable by ferry boat or float plane, Craig is a fishing village located on the outside coast of Prince of Whales Island. Ken was working icing and tendering fish when around five years ago he decided that he wanted to start selling the seafood he was handling. With help from the Seafood Producers Cooperative, Ken built a fish plant where he could freeze and process seafood right there in Craig.

“The quicker you freeze it the better the quality,” explains Ken, so being near the fishing grounds where species like Spot shrimp are caught makes a big difference. He goes on, “In my opinion, you can’t get any better product. It’s frozen within 24 hours.” Sitka Seafood Market sources Spot shrimp from Seaborn Seafoods because of its focus on quality.
